About Mark

Mark Cameron Shields was born in Glasgow. When he was 27, he left Scotland and travelled to Australia, living mainly in Melbourne with its flamboyant art and people. Mark spent several months working as a bush farmer in country Victoria. After two years in Australia, Mark moved to Auckland, where he has lived ever since. Mark attempts to emulate the writing style of the greats of Noir and Roman Noir; Raymond Chandler, James M. Cain, Dashiell Hammett and present-day author Walter Mosley. His style is to set his stories from the 1920s to-1960s avoiding modern technology, making them darker and more challenging for his characters to escape and sealing their fate. Mark’s stories mostly take place on a fictional island that he created. On this island, his characters are in a good place in life, but their dark past will always catch them up in the end, bringing their entire world crashing down on them.
